RIM’s Blackberry has been in trouble for quite some time now – that for sure is clear to all tech junkies out there. The constant delays of Blackberry 10 didn’t help the current status of this mobile platform. Although Blackberry has been unable to innovate their devices as quickly or as effectively compared to Apple and Google , I still wouldn’t consider Blackberry out of the race just yet.

Last week I was given the chance to try one of their devices , the BlackBerry Curve 9320. It was my first time to handle a Blackberry phone and to tell you honestly Blackberry do create good phones.

BlackBerry Curve 9320

Design
The design of this model is much better than that of 9300. A single power/sleep button on top plus two convenience key (left and right side) that is programmable. The one on the right is default for camera while the one on the left marked BBM is Blackberry’s free instant messaging service. And for someone using BBM a lot you’ll find this key useful.

I’m not really that fond of using QWERTY keyboard but this specific design is much simpler to use once you’re familiar with it. It also has a 2.4 inch screen which isn’t a touch screen by the way so you’ll be using a trackpad beneath it to access menus and web pages. The sensitivity level of the trackpad can be adjusted depending on your usage.

The screen provides a resolution of 320×240 which means it wouldn’t be the an ideal handset for those who browse a lot online. Custom apps would naturally be used more frequently than the browser because while menus and apps are clear, the device’s screen finds it hard to browse complex site. Other than that the complete design is created purely for function.

Software
Using BlackBerry 7.1 OS this device boast it’s speed and integration with social media like Facebook and Twitter. A lot more application can be downloaded on Blackberry App World , but do not expect the same number of decent apps this days compared to those of iPhone, Android and even Windows Phone.

Features
It is powered by an 806MHz processor backed by 512MB RAM. Considerably fast as long as you’re not opening a lot of apps at the same time. Connectivity options are good as well, with HSDPA 3G skills alongside A2DP Bluetooth. And I like how this device automatically connects you to saved wireless network saving you the time of manually reconnecting.

Additional bonus would be a FM (RDS) Radio which works well compared to other phones.

Camera
This device has a 3.2-megapixel camera which is fixed focus. Don’t expect too much fun with the camera since it’s designed mostly on being functional. It does come with an LED flash, 4x digital zoom and a range of scene modes, including landscape , face detection and night mode.

Memory & Battery
Memory can be upgraded up to 32GB via microSD card. While the battery life gives you a couple of days of intensive use which I think is a major plus factor for usability.

Conclusion
As always BBM has been the biggest factor of Blackberry usage. This current model also have BBM working better than before however with the IPhone’s iMessage rising up , Blackberry is facing a rival in the instant messaging bracket.

Media apps and games are very far behind the Iphone and Android smartphones which makes the younger market to migrate on the rising mobile platforms.

As a smartphone BlackBerry Curve 9320 could be considered as one of the simplest device on the market. Average almost in usability but delivers well on targeted audience such as young texters and social networkers. Boasting it’s quality keyboard and upgraded BBM.
BlackBerry Curve 9320
The BlackBerry Curve 9320 price range around Php11,000 – Php12,000.
